Ok, I understand there are people out of work. I also understand it can take a while to find a job. In fact I have several friends that have been looking for months, and by looking I mean flying all over the country for interviews.
However, just yesterday I heard another example on the radio of people that are actually enjoying the extended unemployment benefits and don't really care when they find a job.
Are we simply making the problem worse by offering so many advantages and programs for everyone to enjoy?
If you haven't used very many government programs do you start to feel "cheated"?
To me it feels like there is a lower and lower sense of urgency as the economic situation gets worse and worse. It's almost a feeling of entitlement.
"Ohh, not to worry I don't need a job right away, the government will help me out"
This topic can snowball into the much larger social security topic but I will save that for another day.

I actually experienced this thought process real life. I was shocked when the point was proven to me. The person I was talking with was very picky about what jobs to apply for. I stated "a job is a job." Comment I received back was "But I can make more from unemployment then I can if I take this job". I pushed the issue so much so that when the numbers were laid out for me indeed the person was correct.
Personally I think if they ever invented the Star Trek Holo-deck, our civilization would come to an end.
If the government told me "You can work 40+ hrs a week or you can get paid sitting at home playing Warcraft." I would jump at the chance to sit on my *ss all day.
However the max unemployment benefit in this state is about $1400 a month and only for 12 months. This would be tempting for anyone earning $12-15 an hour but it would really hurt anyone who has a few payments to make.
I would argue that humanity by nature is very lazy. It was a big factor in the downfall of soviet Russia.
So to answer your question, yes.
I looked up Minnesota Unemployment benefits and it's a max of 50% of your weekly salary or $566, whichever is less.
I agree with you, the only thinking that would prevent me from sitting and playing computer games for a couple of months would be either a good job or my ambition.
Yes if I made more with unemployment than with a new low paying job out of my field I would hesitate. If the new job was in my field then I would probably take the new job even for less money to stay in the "game". I would probably play games for a month though with that native lazy streak of human nature...
