Where Has James Cameron Been Hiding?

So, this past weekend I watched The Abyss Special Edition for the 4th or 5th time (if you haven't seen it go rent it but make sure it's the longer version) and I starting thinking.

Where the heck has James Cameron been hiding?

He hasn't done a feature film since Titanic, 10 years ago. Granted, he probably made enough on that movie to feed 300 starving polar bears for life but he really needs to make another movie.

Remember this is the man that invented the Terminator franchise and co wrote Aliens. For the love of all that is sci-fi get him back behind the big screen camera.

Well, thanks to the wonders of wikipedia here comes:

Avatar

What is this movie about?
Two centuries in the future, an ex-marine is offered the chance to travel to a distant planet inhabited by a primitive alien race, in order to help exploit the planet's resources.

Is this a live-action or a CGI movie?
It will be a hybrid - ie 60% computer-generated imagery and 40% live-action. The CGI elements in the movie will play such a pivotal role that two years of post production have been set aside for WETA (the New Zealand based special effects company founded by Peter Jackson) to work on unprecedented photorealism. In short, when the movie is released, audiences should not be able to tell what's real, and what's CGI.

What kind of 3D is being used?
The live action elements of the movie will be filmed with a dual lens stereoscopic camera co-developed by James Cameron. The camera has two lenses separated by the same distance that our human eyes are. The lenses are able to focus on a close object by slanting inward, the same way your eyes do when you are able to attempt to look at your own nose.
The end result should be the most convincing 3D cinematic experience ever.

When is this movie being released?
It was originally scheduled for release on 22 May, 2009. However, in order to allow for enough time to achieve the level of special effects photorealism that James Cameron is aspiring toward, and in order to accomodate 3D projectors being installed around the world, the producers all agreed to push the date of release to 18 December, 2009. This gives "Avatar" one of the longest post-production periods in cinema history - almost two full years.

For a bit more about the technology read this

I predict this series will rival that of

Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Lord of the Rings franchises

James Cameron has a wonderul sci-fi character driven mind and this movie could/should be spectacular.
